Creating an effective Vision and Mission Statement!
- It is my firm belief that every company, big and small, should have a vision statement and mission statement. These two statements are just as important as your short and long term goals. Having a vision and mission statement will actually help you in creating your goals and building a stronger, healthier, and more profitable future.
What’s the difference in a Vision vs Mission Statement?
- Vision Statement
To summarize, a vision statement is a passage of text which explains what your company hopes to become. This could be in relation to the community, in relation to the internet, or in relation to the world. A vision statement also serves the purpose of being a striving point towards your company’s future. Your company in effect is building towards your vision of yourselves. You need to keep your vision in view when creating goals to keep on track.
Length of Vision Statements:
Short Vision Statements have the benefit of being easily remembered. “I want my company to be the leading resource for Operating Systems in the entire world.” This would be an example of what a Microsoft or Mac type company could/would have for a short vision statement.
Long Vision Statements are also beneficial in the sense that they are more detailed and can keep you on track. “I want my company to be the leading resource for Operating Systems in the entire world, while being cost efficient, paying fair wages, and being eco-friendly to the environment.” A Long Vision Statement would usually be a few paragraphs/pages but you get the general idea. Basically you take a short vision statement and extend the length of it with conditions/more visions.
- Mission Statement
A mission statement is an explanation of what your company exists to accomplish, what your company currently offers, and how it offers it. It alludes to the objectives and purpose of your company, and tries to continue working for that purpose. Here is a quick example of an idea to mapping out your mission statement. Think of law enforcement or the army, their mission is to protect and serve. Sometimes the army is given a mission to save civilians from a specific building and they will do everything in their power to accomplish that mission. I feel that a company should have something to that degree within their mission statement. A clear defined purpose and motive to an objective to accomplish for the company.

- As you can see my goals are not far fetched, or difficult to accomplish. They will challenge my current comfort zone, and require work on my part. The most important part is that those goals are all: attainable, measurable, meaningful, and time sensitive.
Make Success Measurable
- Make Success Measurable by Douglas K. Smith, is one of the most in depth books about setting goals in the market. He routinely mentions what he does to reach goals successfully. He focuses on the outcomes of his goals(staying positive), instead of the actions he needs to accomplish to reach those outcomes. “This is a how-to book, emphasizing out-comes as opposed to actions in setting goals. You’ll learn how to: Set goals that matter to customers, share-holders, and founders. Set non financial as well as financial goals and link them together. Understand and use outcome-based goals that support success while avoiding activity-based goals that produce failure. Select and use management disciplines needed to achieve your goals.”

What can Tai Chi do For Me?
- While I expanded my knowledge about one of my favorite pass times I came across a newly published book in Barnes and Nobles. The book is titled The Tai Chi Directory and it’s written by Kim Davies. The book has 5 main sections: Why Tai Chi, Principles of Practice, Getting Started, Tai Chi Form, and your Lifestyle. The book is very informative and has expanded on my personal knowledge from my classes. Here is a small excerpt from the text:
”Tai Chi is fantastically good for you. It is a holistic system, meaning that it benefits the mind and spirit as well as the physical body. Regular practice trains your powers of concentration, improves your mental awareness, and teaches you how to control stress. Many of the benefits proceed from the slow, measured rhythm of tai chi. It is impossible to do tai chi in a frantic manner, and so it is impossible to remain stressed while you do it.”(Davies, 2009)
A Summarized List of what Tai Chi can do For You:
1. Improves concentration, and mental awareness.
2. Improves posture, flexibility, and balance.
3. Improves digestion, lowers blood pressure, and boosts your immune system.
4. Reduce and controls stress.
The slow paced nature of tai chi can calm individuals and their fast paced lives.
Tai Chi’s influence on Goals?
- It goes without saying that Tai Chi and any form of regular exercise will have an effect on your performance in life. One thing which always sparks my interest is how tired/lazy my body feels if I miss 2-3 days of working it out. I become sluggish both physically and mentally, my attention seems to be less focused and overall I’m less productive. This is not an isolated issue, many times individuals feel very refreshed by doing tai chi, or meditation/doing yoga. It puts our minds back in sync with our bodies. How many times have you been on a treadmill only to have your mind wonder… …okay back on topic. Exactly! Tai Chi is built in with a calm relaxing meditation which brings your body and mind together as one. This allows you to have a clear focus for the day and tasks ahead. A few points I came up with:
Tai Chi helps you have a relaxed and clear state of mind, helping you stay on track.
Tai Chi will help keep your goals from seeming impossible.
Tai Chi keeps you energized for the day ahead, unlike energy drinks.
I whole heartily recommend The Tai Chi Directory by Kim Davies for Getting Started TODAY with Tai Chi!

Setting Goals is a Way of Life!
- Throughout our entire lives we have been living a life of goals. I say this because our lives are based on rewards and punishments. Just take a quick look at the following aspects of life: Community/Laws, Schooling, Jobs/Working, Politics, etc. Since our lives and aspects of our lives, are built around rewards and punishments it’s understandable and logical why someone would want to set goals to be rewarded.
We have been creating, setting, planning, and acting upon goals since we were children. The actions or thoughts may have been subconscious but they were still present. As we continue to grow and age it is important to set goals to attain things we want in life. These things can be emotional, physical, spiritual. I don’t mention material things because those are usually the easiest things to receive. True depth and knowledge within one’s self (self-help) may be one of the hardest things to achieve and is definitely worth trying for.
These following goal setting tips will help you nurture your future and continue to grow towards building wealth. I have outline 4 main criteria which goals should meet:
1. Goals must be Attainable
2. Goals must be Measurable
3. Goals must be Meaningful
4. Goals must be Time Sensitive
- 1. Goals must be Attainable
In other words, don’t set the bar too high where reaching your goals are either impossible or will take an extraordinary amount of effort. However, they should be challenging enough to expand your current comfort zone.
- 2. Goals must be Measurable
Goals must have a specific way that you can “keep score”. Having goals like “I will do better” don’t qualify because you can’t quantify them.
- 3. Goals must be Meaningful
When you achieve certain goals, they should bring about a sense of accomplishment and some sort of positive change within you, no matter how small that change might be.
- 4. Goals must be Time Sensitive
Goals must be time sensitive because you need to have a sense of urgency to reach it. Otherwise, you might find yourself procrastinating on getting to that next level. I’ve personally lost track of how many times I could have completed important deliverables if I had a better action plan in place and buckled down.
