This is true when building adsense / project sites. This blog doesn't just dwell on monetary gain. When I break down a site I like to think of it in terms of value to the community. Although you are correct that is the formula to see if you are in profit or not. For example one of my sites(hypothetical) makes $5 a month. It cost me $10 a year for the domain + $5 for shared hosting(have many sites on the same plan). I made $60 in a year So I would have made a ($5x12 months) - ($15) = $45 for the year.

ok first find out how much you'll be getting from adsense then find out how much it will cost you to keep up the site. then subtract the amount from adsense from the amount to keeps it up. if it's a negative number go for it!(negetive means profit)
