The importance of animals within the ancient philosophy is shown everywhere. Many temples, buddhist and taoist are fitted with statues and engravings of animals and mythical creatures. Qigong has a few choice animals and meanings for these animals as well. Since Qigong and Taiji are instill in Chinese Heritage and culture it was only natural to have several forms and mythologys about these animals.

The Five Animal Frolics in Qigong are:

bear1a Bear – “The Bear is a great winter exercise. Slow, ponderous, but very strong, it warms the body, strengthens the spleen, and builds vitality. The Bear’s twisting waist movements massage and invigorate the kidneys. The Bear is an excellent preventive against osteoporosis, as it is known to fortify the bones.” “The Bear – to develop rooted power. The Bear creates greater leg strength, fortifies the bones and develops energy in the kidneys, your fundamental source of vitality.” “The Bear is the symbol of strength, power, and healing wisdom. In ancient China, the shaman healers wore bear masks and may have imitated the stepping of the bear in ritual dance.”

dear Deer – “The Deer – to develop grace and relaxation. The Deer gives a long stretch to the legs and spine, creating open, expansive movement with very flexible sinew and bones.” As I began researching Deer Frolic Qigong, after being introduced by my instructor I found that it had a very sexual tantra side to it.
