Traffic Exchanges: Why Use Them?

Why do people use Traffic Exchanges?
When I was thinking about why people use traffic exchanges I came up with three main reasons: traffic, page rank/alexa rank/compete, time efficiency.

Traffic
We all need the extra traffic, right? Well basically people use traffic exchanges because it’s easy traffic. Depending on what they are marketing/drawing traffic to a 30 second visit may do the job. The website which the traffic is going to may be able to capture the readers attention and retain them longer than the 30 seconds/1 minute timer is up. Since most traffic exchanges are manual the user has the choice to continue to the next site or to stick around. With that said, the traffic isn’t targeted but has the chance to convert to targeted traffic.

Page Rank / Alexa / Compete
By using a traffic exchange coupled with an Alexa toolbar you can actually increase your page rank. First, it creates a constant stream of traffic to your site, much like Pay Per Click (PPC). Second, many other individuals also use the Alexa toolbar which will boost your results in both Alexa and search engines. The Alexa toolbar gathers information about a user’s browsing history including what site they visited. If there are alot of people visiting your site with the Alexa toolbar it will actually improve your rank.

Time Efficiency
Traffic exchanges, much like PPC, bring in unique visitors to your website. They do this by basically “setting and forgetting” your campaigns, other than tweaking for better results. This allows the owner of the site to market and earn towards those individuals, much like a PPC campaign. While the traffic exchange is getting you traffic you can focus on other forms of advertising/improving conversion rates. “Traffic is Traffic,” unknown author, whenever I see this quote I immediately think WRONG! In this case with traffic exchanges, “traffic is traffic”, basically you already know what you are getting before you go for it. Traffic exchanges also offer a nice option to “buy credits” which essentially purchases more traffic and more visits to your site. Some traffic exchanges, like traffic swarm, offer premium memberships which come with a slew of features as well.

Traffic with Traffic Exchanges

What is a Traffic Exchange?
As the name implies, they are sites/companies which allow you to exchange traffic with other sites. Traffic exchanges are also sometimes considered manual surfing sites, where you “surf” sites. Traffic exchanges are usually built around a click/credit system. The more credits you have/use the more exposure and traffic your site will receive.

What is the quality of traffic?
(Now what I’m going to say is just my personal generalized opinion, and should not discourage you.) Most of the traffic which comes from traffic exchanges is “mindless” traffic. I say “mindless” because most visitors are only waiting for the 30-60 second timers to be up. Once the 30-60 second timers are up the can click on the next site to continue earning credits. This means two things:

First – You need to capture attention within 15 seconds
Second- you need to convert in the next 15 seconds, before the 30 second timer expires.

With the above said I would not totally discredit traffic exchange traffic. I have clicked for credits and probably will again in the future. Every time I start a new project I add it to my traffic exchanges. If you really think about it, it’s very similar to PPC marketing. The form of payment which is offered to the user is credits and you still market your product. Likewise, instead of pay for the visitor with money you use credits. The more credits you have the more exposure you get and, Yes! you can buy credits.

To date my most effective company that I have used is Traffic Swarm. It’s actually the only traffic exchange company I ever paid to use/get more credits. I have a few (splash/lead capture pages) for various things and routinely see more submissions from Traffic Swarm than all my other traffic exchanges combined.
